Pirelli, a Pure Consumer Tyre Company, has a particular focus on the High Value1 tyre market and is constantly engaged in the development of innovative products created to reach the highest levels of performance, safety, quietness and adherence to the road surface. Tyres to address the most specific mobility needs of the final Consumer.

Within the tyre industry, Pirelli competes with “Tier 1” manufacturers that have higher than average price positioning, a wide range of products and dedicated regional lines. Among these players, Pirelli stands out because of its exclusive positioning in the Pure Consumer Tyre segment, focused on High Value that at the end of 2021 was around 71% of group revenues. In the context of High Value tyres, Pirelli is the leader in Prestige tyres, with a market share of over 50% in the Original Equipment channel.

Over the years, Pirelli has concentrated, above all, on the development, production and marketing of tyres with large rim sizes, special technical and aesthetic characteristics and associated with high performance, advanced technology and safety. Recognized by consumers as high value products, the company’s product range consists of innovative tyres for cars, motorcycles, and bicycles, as well as a growing portfolio of tyres for specific applications and customized ones. Among them Pirelli Cyber™ Tyre, the result of the most recent Research & Development activities and technological innovation, thanks to the sensors inside the tyre (the only element of the car capable of ‘sensing’ the conditions of the surface on which it is being driven) will contribute in delivering essential information to improve vehicle performance and driving safety.

The company’s consumer focus starts at the tyre development stage. For High Value products, this is the result of solid partnerships with the most prestigious car and motorcycle manufacturers, as well as in the Cycling world with the principle teams. These collaborations allow Pirelli to develop tyres, depending on the model, which are tailor made to satisfy the specific needs of the most sophisticated consumers.

RACING

ALL THE TECHNOLOGY MOTORSPORTS
IN CONSUMER PRODUCTS

Pirelli’s technological excellence is also nourished by the innovation and competencies derived from sporting competitions, in which it has been active for over 110 years. Currently, the Company participates in over 350 car and motorcycle sport events and since 2011; it has been the exclusive tyre supplier to the Formula 1© World Championship and will be the sole Global Tyre Partner until 2024. Starting in 2021, was chosen by the FIA – International Automobile Federation – as the sole supplier of tyres for the World Rally Championship, which made possible the technical development of many specialties and features, later implemented also on road tyres. Pirelli is also involved in the main GT competitions, where some of the most prestigious car brands compete. In the two-wheels championship, Pirelli has been chosen by the Dorna WorldSBK Organization, in agreement with the FIM (the International Motorcycle Federation), for the role of Official Tyre Supplier for all classes of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship, up to and including the 2023 season. Thanks to the historical experience gained on racing motorcycles, Pirelli develops its road tyres range, in accordance with the philosophy: “We sell what we race, we race what we sell”. Such a strong presence in motorsport enables Pirelli to generate avant-garde solutions that are then transferred to tyre ranges for the Consumer market, ensuring the maximum levels of performance and safety.

In the field of cycling, which Pirelli entered in 2018, the company signed a partnership with the Mitchelton-SCOTT team that, in the same year, with Simon Yates, achieved top ranking in the World Tour. The partnership with the Australian team was re-confirmed in 2019 (winning four stage victories in the Tour de France) and in 2020, with both the male and female teams. The company also announced a partnership with the prestigious World Tour Trek-Segafredo team. After a season as technical partner, Pirelli has become co-title sponsor of the Wilier PIRELLI mountain bike team, one of the most important and renowned of the international MTB Cross Country marathon scene. Pirelli, for 2021, with the reconfirmation of agreements with teams of the senior most UCI category, added a partnership with a third World Tour team: AG2R Citroën. This last addition to the roster of partnerships is UAE Emirates Team, the squad of two time victor of the Tour de France, Tadej Pogacar. Pirelli’s commitment to the world of cycling continues to grow with the addition of the Canyon – Pirelli team, one of the teams under the celebrated Canyon Collective umbrella, active in the Enduro and downhill disciplines.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION

All of this has grown from a strong commitment to Research and Development based on an “Open Innovation” model. In 2021, Pirelli’s investment in R&D equaled around 6% of its revenues from High Value products, one of the highest levels among the world’s major tyre producers. Pirelli boasts around 2,000 people engaged in R&D, located at its Milan headquarters and 12 local technology centres, and a portfolio of more than 6,700 patents. Pirelli also has in place a series of R&D collaborations and Joint Development Agreements with external players such as suppliers, universities and car manufacturers. It has 50 collaboration projects with Universities, more than 20 Joint Development Agreements and collaborations with suppliers and a huge number of R&D collaborations with Premium car manufacturers in innovative technologies.
In 2021, Pirelli launched the second level University Masters program “R&D Excellence Next”, devised in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano, which involved 34 recently hired young engineers with the goal of training specialized engineers.

Eco & Safety Performance products identify the car tyres that Pirelli produces throughout the world and that fall under rolling resistance and wet grip classes A, B, C according to the labelling parameters set by European legislation.

Pirelli’s commitment to the creation of sustainable value that characterizes the Company’s responsible management and its economic, social and environmental performance has resulted in its inclusion in some of the world’s most prestigious sustainability stock market indices.

In 2021, Pirelli continued to record improvements in its environmental, social and economic performances, achieving significant milestones.

In February 2021, Pirelli won the gold medal, with its confirmation in the “Gold Class” category, in the context of the Sustainability Yearbook 2021 published by S&P Global that looked at the sustainability profiles of over 7,000 companies.

In May 2021, Pirelli was the first company in the world to produce a line of tyres certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) designed for the new BMW X5, setting a new milestone on the path to ever more sustainable production.

In September 2021, Pirelli was re-confirmed, the only one of the automotive segment, as part of the United Nations’ Global Compact Lead.

In October of 2021 Pirelli announced the launch of a project in the Indonesian forest of Hutan Harapan, in collaboration with the BMW Group and Birdlife International, which entails activities in support of local communities, forest conservation and protection of at risk animal species.

In November 2021, Pirelli announced that it has received, the only tyre maker in the world, three stars from the Environmental Accreditation Programme of FIA, Federazione Internazionale dell’Automobile. It is an acknowledgement recognizing the results obtained by the company in terms of sustainability in motorsport, thanks to a supply chain that is wholly managed according to the criteria of environmental and social sustainability.

In December 2021 Pirelli was confirmed a global leader in the fight against climate change earning a position in the Climate A list 2021 prepared by CDP, the international non-profit organization that gathers, disseminates and promotes information on environmental matters. The “A” rating is the highest rating attainable and was given to only 200 of the 13,000 participants. In line with the target of reaching ‘carbon neutrality’ in 2030, in 2021 the work of decarbonizing of the group’s value chain continued: in terms of absolute CO2 emissions in 2021 Pirelli achieved the Target Science Based well below 2°C four years ahead of schedule, and requested a Target upgrade from SBTi in line with 1.5°C. There was a significant increase in the use of renewable electricity: In particular, 100% of the electricity purchased by the group in 2021 was certified renewable.

Following the annual review of the Dow Jones Sustainability indices by S&P Global, Pirelli was confirmed a world level excellence in the Automobiles & Components sector in the Dow Jones World and Europe indices, with an overall score of 77 compared with the sector average of 31.
